MAP's FT has been an important inspiration for me, as a writer and as an artist, for a long time. So here's my FT-art "through the ages", in order of creation, more or less. (Sorry, you'll have to suffer through the bad to get to the good ^_~) ... Click on the images to see the larger versions.
The first image is the second drawing of Jan I'd ever done, back in Sophmore year of high school, in 1991. (The first got confiscated by a teacher *sigh*) Bad, ne? You can probably see the influence from Michael Hague's cover of BotF. But those LEGS, ugh! Awful. The second picture I made right after that one, and was meant to depict a later battle between Jan's herd and the wyverns, after it became known that he was the Firebringer. This was before MAP had written the first of the sequels, Dark Moon (which I didn't even manage to acquire until 1997, a full decade after reading BotF! I actually got SoSS nearly six months before it!) The thrid picture I did not too long after, when I finally had a set of "tech pens" ...
First image is Illishar, circa 1997 ... The second is The Gryphon Aerie, circa 2000. I took that old pic of Illishar and decided to make it more generic, so I could sell copies of it. Notice that, by the colouring, it's a tercel AND a formel, LOL ...
This started out as a pic of Jan, but I decided to make it Korr when I coloured it on the computer. Circa 2000. I was kind of trying out Paintshop Pro at the time ...
Did these not long after the one of Korr (also 2000). they're all concept art for characters I created for an RPG I was running with the International Firebringer Appreciation Society (henceforth known as the IFAS). The RPG never got finished, alas. The first is the "Gorgon Naga", queen of the Naga (half snake, half human). I have another version of this pic somehwere that has her holding the dragon's firebowl. The second image is a basilisk -- part snake, part chicken, they turn creaturs to stone. The third image is of the basilisk king, which has "evolved" into a "cockatrice" ...
The first pic here is Ses and Caly. I scanned in a painting I had done, and used it for the background. I was still getting used to using the thing, and didn't really know anything at all at the time about DPI, resolution, etc *sigh*. The second pic The scene where Jan realises he's in love with Tek, in the milkwood grotto, has always stuck out in my mind -- although I don't think this comes even CLOSE to doing it justice. Both pics circa 2001 ...
I sat down one day and when through all the books, and wrote down all the references I could find about locations, scenery, and directions, and came up with this. (The Burrows is from that IFAS RPG I was runningand was home to the naga and the basilisks, in the Salt Flats) Circa 2001.
In March of 2000, the IFAS had a logo contest of sorts. What you see here is the IFAS versions (altough these aren't the originals -- last year I cleaned up the image, changed the starry background, etc), as well as the version I did for *this* site.
The first image is conceptart of my character, A'lell'ysha the hyppogryph (half unicorn, half gryphon), aka Alayha Laysinger circa 2000. As you can see, I never finished it. The second is a finished piece, circa April 2003. I created Alayha when I joined the IFAS. She's supposed to be the future daughter of Lell and Illishar (MAP describes hyppogryphs in one of Jan's visions, so I put two and two together, and figured Lell and Illishar were the origin of this new species.) She was to be the end result of that aforementioned failed RPG -- it was to lead to her birth. One of these days I'll get around to writing it as a fanfic ...
It had been a goodly while since I had done anything FT-related, and Caly, the founder of the IFAS, suggested I enter the contest they were having for a new cover image for the site. So, figuring I could use the practice with the paints and generate something new for my portfolio, I took him up on the challenge -- although I didn't actually enter it into the contest. It's Jan, running through the wyvern's tunnels and setting them ablaze. (Image opens in a new window, at my devinatART account.)
I didn't do this one myself. Rather, it's a pic by a gal named Indigo, of my character, Alayha ...
This is just a page of sketches I did of the characters of MAP's Darkangel Trilogy ...
